Sunday Tradition
Roger Jones

Roger Jones was born and raised in Cullman, Alabama. Roger began playing drums at the age of eight. Shortly afterward he began playing bass and then guitar. He got his first banjo at the age of twelve. As a kid, Alfred (his dad) would take Roger to places he was playing music. Roger would sit in the floor between the pickers and listen until he fell asleep. “My biggest musical influence was my dad because he always took me with him when he was playing. Other than my dad, I was influenced by the Osborne Brothers, George Jones, Jimmy Martin, Bill Monroe, and J.D. Crowe.”

Roger has played many different types of music throughout his life. He has played drums in a country band, bass in a country band, in a rock and roll group, and for an Elvis tribute show. Also, he has played banjo with several groups. Roger worked professionally with The Warrior River Boys, as well as Kenny Baker and Josh Graves. In 1991, Roger got out of music for about twelve years. After getting back into church in 1993, Roger married his wife, Carol, in 1994. Eventually, he decided to begin playing again, but this time for a different reason. This time he was playing for God instead of himself. Roger began playing banjo with a gospel group called Full Circle and after a couple of years that has evolved into what is now Sunday Tradition.

Roger, his wife Carol, and their daughter Shelley are members of Round Island Baptist Church in Athens, Alabama. Roger is a co-teacher of an adult Sunday school class and is a member of the usher team. Carol is a children’s church helper and is the sound technician for the children’s choir. Roger and his family are members of the extended care team.
