Sunday Tradition
Steve McCulloch

Steve was born and raised in Decatur, Alabama. His love for music began around the age of ten. His first guitar was found in a neighbors trash pile headed for the county dump. Steve took the guitar home, strung it up with some Weed Eater string in his dad’s shop, and beat on the guitar relentlessly. Eventually, he got a new guitar and began to learn a few songs. Steve’s early influences were B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Flatt and Scruggs, The Dillards (from the Andy Griffith Show) and Ricky Skaggs. “I love all types of music, but bluegrass and the blues own me.” Steve began playing rock music shortly after high school and within several years, he was playing with several bands learning the in’s and out’s of the music business. In the spring of 1998, Steve gave up rock music and played his last show, a fundraiser for the West Morgan Athletic Booster Club.

After a short time away from music, Steve began to play again at his church. After a few years of jamming a couple nights a week, they formed The Macedonia Boys. The Macedonia Boys played bluegrass and bluegrass gospel music throughout Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Georgia. Being a part of several mission trips, they got to perform in Oklahoma, Kentucky, West Virginia, and New Hampshire. The Macedonia Boys broke up in 2004. Afterwards, he joined Sunday Drive from Cullman, AL. They played for two years around North Alabama. After Sunday Drive, Steve had decided to get out of music. During this time, he played a few times with Casey and Melissa Culwell, Phillip Snittiker, and Chuck Carpenter. “I learned so much about the dynamics of music from them. Not only are they great musicians, but great friends!”
In 2008, Roger Jones called Steve and asked if he could fill in a few shows with Full Circle. Steve had played with them once before at the Old Time Fiddler’s Convention in Athens, AL. When health issues forced a member of Full Circle to retire from the band, Steve joined Roger, Daniel, Steven, and David to form Sunday Tradition.

Steve became a Christian in July of 1984. “I was saved on the Wednesday night before I went to the alter on Sunday. Pastor Earl Holt and I were looking at the baptistery being installed in the new church building. While looking at it, he began discussing salvation with me and I accepted Christ into my life.” Steve served as a youth director from 1999-2005. Currently, he serves as a deacon and plays in the praise band at Life Point Baptist Church in Decatur, AL.
Steve is married to Wendy Johnson McCulloch of Trinity. They have been married for ten years. They have one daughter, Rylee Nicole. Steve is employed at West Morgan High School, where he teaches 7th Grade Civics and coach’s varsity football and freshman, JV, and varsity basketball. Steve has several guitars. Currently, he plays a 1990 Martin HD-28, a 2002 Martin HD-28 and a Calise Guitar (made by his buddy Casey Culwell).

Steve proudly endorses Calise Guitars.
